Suffolk Freemasons designate 2022 as ‘Year of the Almoner’

Wednesday, 23 February 2022

No one would dispute that the last 18 months has been challenging for the whole country, and of course our masonic community. Throughout this period Freemasonry has relied on its Lodges to support its members, dependants, and families, with care, support, and compassion

In most cases, this help has been headed up by the Lodge Almoner. The Almoner is one of the most important officers in the Lodge, providing care and welfare to members and their families. The role requires commitment and dedication but gives huge rewards when distress is relieved or problems are resolved. The Almoner works tirelessly in the background throughout the year, not just the Masonic season. Sometimes, this effort is not recognised.

Therefore the Provincial Grand Lodge of Suffolk has designated 2022 as the 'Year of the Almoner'. This will increase the awareness of the Almoner’s role, the duties involved, and the rewards that can be derived from the work.

The Provincial Grand Almoner for Suffolk Jamie Gwatkin stated 'I am delighted that our executive have endorsed this important initiative. The Provincial Almoner Team will be visiting every lodge in the Province over the next 12 months, to acknowledge the Almoner’s achievements, communicate how support from the Masonic Charitable Foundation (MCF) can be enhanced, and announce how the Province will celebrate this vital enterprise.'

The Provincial Grand Master Ian Yeldham added 'Looking after and supporting each other are so important to us all at this time. The Province has relied on the sterling work of our Almoners and their supporting brethren to fulfil this task over the last 18 months. I am delighted to support this initiative. Suffolk will be a beacon to others in the way which we value our Almoners and the support they give to our community.'

To launch the year, the Province has asked every lodge in Suffolk to add a newly created logo to all their correspondence, to signify their commitment to the initiative and show our appreciation of our Almoners.
