60 years a Mason

Tuesday, 07 June 2022

We have seen a few 50 year certificates presented over the years, but at a recent meeting of the Loyal Monmouth Lodge, those present were privileged to witness the recognition of a 60 year masonic career

Derek Charles Hockey received a 60 year certificate from Richard G. Davies Provincial Grand Master who then gave a synopsis of Derek’s life and experiences.

Derek  was formally a Broker at Lloyds of London and was born and raised in Eltham London. He joined Freemasonry at the Blackheath Lodge at the age of 24 in the early 1960’s as there were a number of family members already in Blackheath Lodge. His Grandfather was Worshipful Master in the 1930s. Derek's Uncle proposed him and his Father seconded the Proposition. Quite a family affair.

On 2nd June 1962 Derek married Jennifer and they celebrate 60 years of marriage this year. On retiring to Staunton village in the Forest of Dean, Derek was a founding member of Staunton and District Gardening Club and is now Chairman of the Buckholt and District Gardening Club.
Derek has always been supportive of Scouting, and Jennifer is a life long Scouter and was Group Scout Leader for Monmouth.

Derek is an amazing Jazz pianist. But only plays in private and for family but he enjoys teaching his grandchildren. After such a busy life Derek and Jennifer's favourite pastime is now spending time with family and gardening.
