John Wainwright, Senior Warden of St Alkmund Lodge No. 2311 at Whitchurch in Shropshire, represented Great Britain at the Winter World Transplant Games in France this year and won gold in the snowboarding event
The Games were held in France during January at the alpine resort of La Chapelle d'Abondance. Over 1,500 competitors attended from more than 56 countries, which makes John's success all the more noteworthy.
The Transplant Games were first held in Portsmouth in 1978, and in the years since the Summer and Winter Games have served to raise awareness of the need for organ donors, as well as to encourage transplant patients to be involved in sport and an active lifestyle. John has certainly played his part in raising the profile of the Games among the masons of Shropshire. Rumours that he completed his snowboarding course with a little blue book open in one hand are, however, believed to be false.
