FREEMASONRY TODAY

Freemasonry Cares – a resident at an RMBI Care Home
RMBI
Making a Difference Together
The RMBI has been caring for older
Freemasons and their dependants for
over 160 years, operating 17 care homes
across England and Wales offering a
range of high quality care. Many of these
Homes are registered for both residential
and nursing care and a number offer
specialist dementia care.
Donations, festivals and legacies are an
invaluable source of income for the
RMBI. Through the generosity of
Freemasons, the RMBI has provided
support to 40% of residents in its care
homes. This translates to just over £4
million in financial support, ensuring
that an RMBI Home is a home for life
for those residents who run out of capital
during the period of their care in an
RMBI Home.
The RMBI is able to offer this level of
support for as long
as we can cater for
the individual’s
care needs. This
ensures that
residents receive
high quality care
with the peace of
mind that they will
not be evicted if
they are unable to
pay their fees. Our
grateful thanks go
to the Provinces
for their continual
effort in raising money to enable us to
continue supporting older Freemasons
and their dependants.
The Association of Friends groups – a
type of supporters club within each of
our Home – also plays a vital part in
supporting the RMBI and its
residents. Their dedication and
commitment in organising events and
raising money is greatly appreciated
by staff and hugely benefited by
residents.

Working Jointly to Help Freemasons
The charities are working hard together to
support Freemasons and their dependants.
The RMBI have a team of six Care
Advice Visitors who work throughout
England and Wales and know a great deal
about health and welfare rights and
benefits. The Team visit people in their
own homes, or may speak to someone via
telephone and post out information.
The Team give advice
on how to apply for
residency in an RMBI
Home and how this
could be financed. They
can also give advice on
all aspects of the
services offered by the
RMBI, the other Central
Masonic charities and
by statutory and
voluntary agencies. An
example of their work
can be found below.
A Provincial Grand
Almoner raised concerns
to his regional RMBI Care Advice Visitor
regarding an older Brother living alone with
health problems. The gentleman lived in a
block of flats and was finding it
increasingly difficult to manage on his own.
The Care Advice Visitor made contact with
the Brother to determine the best options
available to him that would cater for his
long-term care needs and liaised with the
lodge almoner, as appropriate. He decided
to move into an RMBI Home, and with
support from the Masonic Samaritan Fund,
was able to trial the Home on a short-term
respite stay before moving in permanently.
The RMBI Care Advice Team hold talks
at lodge meetings, coffee mornings and
fellowship groups. If you would like a
member of the Care Advice Team to visit
one of your meetings or you wish to talk
to someone about your care needs, please
get in touch by visiting www.rmbi.org.uk
or call us on 020 7596 2400.
