Herefordshire Team on Welsh Sponsored Charity Walk
A group of
Herefordshire
masons,
including
Provincial Grand
Master Rodney
Smallwood and
his deputy, the
Reverend David
Bowen, plan a
sponsored walk
in relay across
central Wales in less than 24 hours.
During the walk a message will be
delivered to Dr John Lloyd, Provincial
Grand Master for South Wales,
Western Division.
The team will set off on 1 May from
Arrow Lodge No. 2240 in the market
town of Kington in Herefordshire and
carry out the 60-mile trek to raise
funds for the Grand Charity.
The historic route will follow the A44
to Rhayader, then the Mountain or
Old Coach Road through
Cwmystwyth, Devil’s bridge and on
to Aberystwyth. The route crosses
the width of the counties of Powys
and Ceredigion.
But excellent first aid is at hand – one
of the walkers is Ken Harvey,
Chairman of the Masonic Relief
Grants Committee – who said: ‘It will
only be a box of plasters!’
Getting Their Goat in Northampton
An unexpected
visitor was
found tied to a
tree in the car
park of the
masonic centre
at Northampton
recently – an
elderly and
somewhat
bewildered goat.
Despite having
CCTV in the car park, it has been
impossible to trace who left the goat
there, and the RSPCA took him
away. The old fellow has been found
a new home locally and is reported
to be getting on very well in his new
surroundings. It is not known
whether he was abandoned or the
charitable heart of Freemasons was
being put to the test – or did
someone take too seriously jokes
about masons and goats?

It's A Dog's Life!
There was a special ‘thank you’ for
Sussex Assistant (now Deputy)
Provincial Grand Master Joe Wilkins,
when he presented a cheque for
£20,000 to Canine Partners on behalf
of the Freemasons’ Grand Charity.
Canine Partners, based near
Midhurst in Sussex, assists people
with disabilities to enjoy a greater
independence and a better quality of
life and, where possible, help them
into education and employment by
providing specially trained dogs.
Essex Consecrates New Masters' Lodge
A new Masters’
lodge has been
consecrated in
Essex because
the current
Essex Masters
Lodge is about
to celebrate its
centenary with
almost one
thousand
members on
its register.
The Province
had identified a
need for the
new lodge in the north of the
Province, and the consecration of
North Essex Masters Lodge No. 9831
was conducted by the Provincial
Grand Master, John Webb, at Frinton
and Walton Masonic Centre.
The Provincial Grand Master said that
the fact that 120 Past Masters had
become Founders was proof of the
need for the new lodge.
