The image of a Ladies’ Festival or a lodge celebration of any kind has changed forever. These days, lodges plan weekends away, sometimes at a resort in their own part of the country, sometimes travelling considerable distances to benefit from a complete change of scenery. Such events have become very easy to organise since the hotel industry has adapted to the needs of lodges, and will often undertake the organising, timing, planning, layout of the dining area and even the complete weekend programme.
    One such organisation is Village Hotels and Leisure Clubs, part of the De Vere organisation. It is one of the fastest growing mid-market groups in the UK. With good locations, facilities and expert support, lodges are guaranteed to find everything they are looking for. With the addition of locations in Bournemouth and in Hull the number of hotels within the group has risen to sixteen. Their leisure clubs, restaurants, Village Pubs and cafés, all offer a social environment for the whole family.
    The Village hotel and leisure club at Bournemouth is one of the latest, and has already been host to Ladies’ weekends this year. In addition to the facilities mentioned, their locations also offer wellequipped meeting rooms, leisure clubs, gyms and indoor swimming pools.
    Speaking about their experience with one lodge’s Ladies’ Festivals, their Operations Manager Paul Beswick says ‘At first it was a new experience for us as well as for the lodge, who had never organised a weekend event before, but we both learned quickly, and everyone had a fantastic time. They have already booked a second visit next year.’ The sixteen Village Hotel and Leisure Clubs are dotted around the country, and further locations will be opening in the coming years.
    One of the most interesting venues we have seen is the Macdonald Hotel and Spa at Frimley Hall in Berkshire. This is a Victorian Manor House set in beautiful grounds with ideal dining facilities and a health spa. This is a companion to the Macdonald Berystede at Ascot which boasts 126 rooms with air conditioning, a functions suite with a capacity of 320 and in addition plenty of room for relaxation. ‘Catering for lodge parties is an area we are particularly pleased to work in,’ said Ricky Sur, their Sales Executive, ‘and we like to think we can take the burden off the lodge by organising dining layout, place settings, toastmasters and all the other details that go with making the lodge function enjoyable and memorable.’ They also have a roof terrace for outdoor dining during the summer months and gated parking for over 250 cars.
    De Vere Grand Harbour is Southampton’s only five-star hotel and has just invested in upgrading all of its facilities. Alongside the new Conference facilities the Grand Harbour has expanded its beauty facilities and team of therapists with the launch of ‘SERENITY’, an area including four new treatment rooms, a relaxation area, Jessica nail stations and a juice bar as well as the existing swimming pool, sauna, steam room and gym.
